FILM APPRECIATION & CRITICISM

Brief Description:

Film appreciation and criticism is the next step after simply watching a film for entertainment or stress-relieving purposes. This involves some amount of time thinking and discussing about what one just saw. Through this process, a film will never take on one uniform meaning as discussions about a film raises different perspectives.

This course is designed to navigate around the field of film and cinema. The workshop involves analysis of films from different vantage points like entertainment, artistry, politics, and culture. It also includes exercises as to which the workshopper can cultivate the skill and habit of reading films and making meaning out of it.

NON-LINEAR EDITING

Brief Description
The non- linear editing workshop provides participants the basic to semi- advanced skills to edit with a digital editing software (Final Cut Pro) in a Mac computer lab.

Participants learn by a series of lectures and hands- on appplication of the fundamentals of digital nonlinear editing. They are able to execute their acquired knowledge and skills through editing a short scene from a narrative film, a music video, and an entire short film.

Edting as an intergral part of filmmaking
Capabilities of post-production

Digital photography is the most common type of photography nowadays. Through it, taking, editing, and producing photos has never been simple and immediate. In addition, photography is a good foundation for those aspiring filmmakers since, like film, it requires the photographer to tell a story visually.

This course is designed to introduce and explore the art of photography as a primary skill needed in film production. Composition, framing, lighting, camera settings, and photo editing are included in the topic discussions as well. As this workhop falls within the scope of digital technology, it also takes time in thoroughly discussing the parts and operations of a digital camera.

Brief Description:

Cinematography is a vital aspect of filmmaking. Cinematography covers elements of film such as shot selection, framing, composition, and lighting. The cinematographer is in charge of framing the shots in cinematic ways that would be enjoyable and pleasing for the audience.

The course is designed to explore the fundamental aspects of cinematography from basic camera set-up to lighting principles. Several principles and techniques that enhance the storytelling of a film are included in the discussions. A hands-on activity is also incorporated in the workshop so as to provide cinematography work conditions/atmosphere.

Brief Description:
Screenwriting is the imagined film in paper and words. It develops writers to think visually in telling their stories. The screenplay produced by the screenwriter becomes the basis of the director for every decision in making the film.

This course is designed to introduce and cultivate the skill of screenwriting (which mostly is for TV and film). As screenwriters are tasked to envision the film in writing, the workshop is intended to teach visual storytelling, screenwriting principles, tips in conceptualization, and screenplay design and elements.

About the Facilitator
Renan Saliva teaches photography as a faculty in the U.P. Film Institute in which he graduated in 1994 with Best Thesis honors. He has also worked as producer and writer for Central Luzon TV 36 and segment producer for TAPE Inc.’s Eat Bulaga. His show “So To Speak” in Central Luzon TV 36 won a Golden Dove Award, Best Public Affairs Show last 2011.

The extension class is not an exclusive session of previous workshop participants of Prof. Campos. There will be a screening of applicants–but this only applies to applicants who have not gone through the first workshop. Attendance and participation to previous Film Appreciation and Criticism workshop/s ensures one’s credibility to attend the class.

About the Facilitator
Prof. Patrick F. Campos is a member of the faculty of film at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, where he received the 2017 Chancellor’s Award for outstanding professor. He is author of works on Philippine and Southeast Asian cinemas, media, and popular culture, and his latest book, The End of National Cinema: Filipino Film at the Turn of the Century (2016), was a finalist for the 2017 National Book Awards. He is editor of two leading Philippine journals on media and art, Humanities Diliman and Plaridel; director of the Office of Research and Publication of the UP College of Mass Communication, where he was named outstanding professor of 2015; the secretary of the cinema committee of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA); and a member of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino.
