23rd SCHLINGEL Film Festival: Last Call for Entries
 Filmmakers, Sales Agents & Distributors from all over the world are welcome to submit their work for the 23rd International Film Festival for Children and Young Audience SCHLINGEL, which takes place from 1 till 7 October 2018 in Chemnitz / Germany. The final deadline for submitting films is 1 July 2018. (Online submission preferred e.g. via Wetransfer.com, link or festivalfocus.org.)

SCHLINGEL presents its films in the following national and international competitions:

INTERNATIONAL FEATURE FILM COMPETITION with the following categories:

Children’s Film Competition (Target audience: till 10 years)

Junior Film Competition (Target audience: 11 till 13 years)

Youth Film Competition (Target audience: from 14 years)

NATIONAL FEATURE FILM COMPETITION GERMAN FOCUS (from 5 years)

INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION FILM COMPETITION (from 4 years)

INTERNATIONAL / NATIONAL SHORT FILM COMPETITION (from 4 years)

Only children’s and youth films completed after the 1 January 2017 can apply for the competitions (feature film,

animation film and documentary). Feature films in our international competitions have to be submitted as a

German premiere at least and need to have a minimum length of 45 minutes. Films to be screened in our national

competition ‘German Focus’ may have been presented at other festivals in Germany and released in cinemas and on TV. Short live-action and animated films are preferred to be German premieres and should not be longer than 45 minutes. Films with a maximum length of 30 minutes are preferred. The festival management reserves the right to decide on exceptions. For the selection process, films need to have German or English subtitles. These screeners will remain with SCHLINGEL for archiving purposes. Links have to remain valid until the end of the festival. Online submissions are preferred.

All Competitions are endowed with a prize money and material prizes. The awards have a total value of 64,000 Euros.

ComingSoon

Under the heading ComingSoon national and international filmmakers are invited to present their upcoming productions in the field of children’s and youth film. The event is part of the SCHLINGEL Industry Forum, which is an international platform for the discussion on current developments in the children’s and youth film sector.

SCHLINGEL is organised by the association Saechsischer Kinder- und Jugendfilmdienst e.V. (Saxon Service for Children’s and Youth Films), co-organiser is the Saxon Institution for Private Broadcasting and New Media SLM.

Open Calls for the 3rd Torino Short Film Market (22-25.11.2018)

Deadline: 10 September 2018

The third edition of the Torino Short Film Market will be taking place on 22-25 November 2018. Open calls have been launched to participate with projects and films. Deadline: 10 September 2018.

Organized by the Italian Short Film Center, the TSFM provides a unique opportunity for dialogue and exchange among professionals in the world of short films and digital media. Over the span of four days, the TSFM hosts pitch sessions, panels, screenings, one-to-one meetings and informal networking occasions aimed at selling, producing and disseminating short films and digital content. The 2017 edition drew 400 accredited professionals from 36 countries.

5 Open Calls for the 3rd Torino Short Film Market:

Digita!

Digita! is a round table discussion, one-on-one meetings with invited attending distributors and a pitching session for national and international production companies and independent authors who have proven experience with digital media.

Distributors meet buyers

Distributors Meet Buyers is a pitching session for Distribution Companies representatives. Selected participants will have 7 minutes to introduce their Distribution Catalogue on a stage in front of an audience.

Oltrecorto

Oltrecorto is a pitching session for directors and/or screenwriters. Selected participants will have 7 minutes to introduce on a stage in front of an audience their Feature Film or TV Series projects based on a previously completed short film.

Pitch Your Fest!

Pitch Your Fest! is a pitching session for organisers of Festivals featuring Short Films in their programme. Selected participants will have 7 minutes to introduce their Festival event on a stage in front of an audience.

Screenings and Video Library

The TSFM 2018 Screenings + Video Library features closed market screenings and a video library organised for the promotion brand new short films. The library is curated by the Torino Short Film Market programmers who are in charge of assessing all the submitted films and assembly specific Curated Programmes. These programmes are featured in the library for promotional purposes to users – such as buyers, distributors, festival representatives and other film professionals. Moreover the library features a selection of Guest Programmes curated by third party bodies – such as Film Institutes, Festivals, Distribution Companies, etc. Films not selected for the Curated Programmes are still listed in the library and available to watch and be searched. Films in the library may also be selected to be screened in the closed market screenings, accessible only with a Torino Short Film Market 2018 accreditation.

23rd SCHLINGEL Film Festival: Last Call for Entries

The UP Film Institute congratulates lecturer Prof. Baby Ruth Villarama for being named as one of the 3 Global Winners of the British Council Study UK Alumni Awards. Prof. Baby Ruth was selected out of 1200 top graduates. This recognition proves that cinema can and will be a tool for positive change to the world. Prof. Villarama handles undergraduate course on Film Production Management.
Prof. Villarama, is an award documentary filmmaker who has won awards for Sunday Beauty Queen which garnered Best Picture prize for the 2017 Metro Manila Film Festival for the Documentary Feature. Among her other films are Jazz in Love (2013) Little Azkals (2014).
She has worked for other celebrated independent features in some other industry capacity and undergone specialized training for esteemed overseas institution such as CICAE (International Confederation of Art Cinemas); the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam; the Pitch Conference at TokyoDocs, among others.
The Study UK Alumni site of the British Council states that Baby Ruth Villarama is an award-winning film maker from the Philippines. “Her films are generating national conversations and raising international awareness of modern day issues such as human trafficking and slavery. Baby Ruth co-founded Voyage Studios, an organisation that collaborates with local and international filmmakers to produce stories that inspire audiences around the world to open their eyes to social issues.” Prof. Baby Ruth Villarama studied a MA in Film Distribution and Marketing at Birmingham City University, and is a Chevening Alumna.

23rd SCHLINGEL Film Festival: Last Call for Entries

The UP Film Institute (UPFI) has reaped nominations for the FAMAS Awards of 2018.

The nominees were announced last May 22 at Victorino’s Restaurant. Among the nominees are alumni Antoinette Jadaone for Love You to the Stars and Back (Best Director); Gian Carlo Abrahan for Paki (Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay); Glenn Barit for Aliens Ata (Best Short Film); Mike Esteves for Link (Best Short Film); Carlo Francisco Manatad for Balangiga: Howling Wilderness (Best Editing); Ike Avellana for Respeto (Best Cinematography); Jewel Maranan for Sa Palad ng Dantaong Kulang (Best Documentary) and UPFI staff Nawruz Paguidopon (Cinematographer IV for Extension Division of UPFI) for God BLISS Our Home (Best Documentary).

The 2018 FAMAS Jury is chaired by scriptwriter Ricky Lee. The awards ceremony, “Gabi ng Parangal,” is scheduled to take place on June 10, 2018 at The Theatre at Solaire.

23rd SCHLINGEL Film Festival: Last Call for Entries

     

         

The UP Film Institute congratulates alumni  Carlo Francisco Manatad  (Batch 2011)  and Armi  Rae Cacanindin (Batch 2005) their  film Whether the Weather Is Fine was awarded the Sorfund Award in L’Atelier Cinefondation

The films tells of the  aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, religious fanatics, desperados, criminals and fleeing animals are loose in the city. Miguel, an escaped prisoner, roams the ruins in search of the two women in his life: his girlfriend Andrea and his mother, Norma.
As soon as he finds them, the reason for Miguel’s incarceration – and his sacrifice – becomes clear. He tries to convince them to leave the city with him before he is arrested. However, Norma is fixated on waiting for her estranged husband Luis. Andrea, however, is entangled in rebellious acts paving the way for her to commit the unspeakable. As Miguel’s temporary release expires, his freedom and even his life are jeopardized.He must decide whether to stay on to persuade his loved ones or to leave town on his own before the next disastrous storm devours him and the only home he knows.

The Cinefondation’s Atelier hosts its fourteenth edition this year and will invite to the Festival de Cannes 15 directors whose projects have been considered particularly promising. Together with their producers, they will be able to meet potential partners, a necessary step to finish their project and start the making of their film. L’Atelier provides its participants access to international co-productions, thus accelerating the film’s completion.

The Cinefondation’s Atelier has been created in 2005 to stimulate creative filmmaking and encourage the emergence of a new generation of filmmakers. So far, out of 202 projects accompanied, 145 have been released in the theaters and 28 are currently in pre-production. For L’Atelier’s 14th edition, 15 projects from 15 countries have been selected, from the new director to the well-known filmmaker.

2018 ASEAN-Korea Youth Network Workshop

The Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman will screen applications from Filipino citizens for the 2018 ASEAN-Korea Youth Network Workshop, which will be held in Seoul, Korea from 2 to 7 July 2018 and in Manila, Philippines from 7 to 12 July 2018.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

The theme of this year’s workshop is “ASEAN and Korean Youth as Drivers of Global Digitalization.” It aims to:

  • Raise the awareness of the ASEAN, Korea, and ASEAN-Korea relations among the participants
  • Deepen understanding of STI and ICT, specifically digital technology and innovation, among the youth participants from ASEAN, Korea, China, and Japan
  • Provide network-building opportunities among the participants

NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS

The UP Asian Center will select two (2) Filipino citizens for the Seoul leg, and ten (10) for the Manila leg. The Seoul participants will also take part in the Manila leg.

ELIGIBILITY

The UP Asian Center will screen only applications from Filipino citizens* based in the Philippines and other ASEAN countries who must :

  • Be currently an undergraduate or graduate student
  • Be 19 to 35 years old
  • Have an interest in ASEAN, ASEAN-Korea relations, and digitalization
  • Have a passport that complies with the six-month validity rule (for Seoul leg participants only)

    • Application fees for a Korean visa

23rd SCHLINGEL Film Festival: Last Call for Entries

After the success last year, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) will once again be hosting the second year of the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP) on August 15-21, 2018.

In partnership with all the theaters in the country, PPP will be selecting eight (8) films to have their Philippine premiere during the event. “PPP was so well-received by our audience last year and we believe that this industry event is worth doing again this year. We are very proud that Filipinos came together to support our own and enjoy our amazing slate of quality genre films,” said FDCP Chairperson and CEO Liza Dino during a meeting with the producers last April 4, 2018 at Salu Restaurant in Quezon City.

“Everybody is looking forward to PPP 2018 and we are working hard to make it even more successful,” she added. PPP will also be an opportunity for producers to enhance their experience and learn more about the ins and outs of the industry, from marketing, to booking, and distributing their films.”

PPP 2018 is open to all Filipino producers with finished films who may submit more than one (1) entry with the following criteria:

  • The film should have themes reflective of the Filipino sensibilities culture with wide audience appeal.
  • The film should have been produced from 2017-2018.
  • The film must have its Philippine premiere during the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino and must not have been previously shown in any format in the country. Films which premiered internationally are eligible.
  • The film should have a minimum of 75 minutes and a maximum of 180 minutes in length.
  • The film must be submitted with English subtitles.
  • The producer must have a distributor.
  • The producer must have a marketing plan ready in the event of selection.

The Filipino Arts & Cinema International or FACINE on the occasion of its 25th/Silver anniversary announces the launching of a critical essay writing competition on Filipino cinema as part of its commitment to educate/inform our public on Filipino cinema, either Philippine or diasporic, and build/organize a scholarship on this important media/popular art form in the United States.

It is my vision, as Director of FACINE, that scholarship, its importance not only in organizing a viable and potent film culture that contributes to the sustainability of our cinema, but that, especially in the context of a festival that has introduced and presented Filipino films to a larger audience for the past 25 years, is crucial in building a global audience in the now and thereafter, much more promoting our people’s interests, our aspirations as a people.

The competition in itself, distinguishes the FACINE festival from other film festivals of its nature, by raising awareness of the need for Filipino film scholarship.

FACINE Critical Essay Writing Competition on Filipino Cinema

RULES

1. The essay should be written in English and be at least 1,500 to NO MORE than 2,000 words long, excluding references. You must provide a word count on the entry form. Eligible essays may be on any subject related to Philippine or Filipino diasporic cinema: single or a group of works; critical evaluation of a film artist’s body of works; serious study of an aspect of film practice, whether creative, craft, industry, government mediation/intervention, audience reception, education, film archiving/preservation, intertextual/meta-textual interpretation of work(s), etc.

2. The essay should be word-processed preferably using MS Word, New Times Roman font, 12 pts for the text; using double-line spacing; with each page numbered, centered at the bottom of each page; and with the essay title, centered on top of each page using Calibri font, 12 pts. Other instructions: a) Indent the first line of new paragraphs; b) Flush left all text.

3. You may provide at the maximum two still photos, either in the color of the original, of acceptable print quality; screen caps may be allowed, but each screen cap is counted as one photo clip.

4. The entrant’s name should NOT be on the essay cover page nor anywhere in the essay. This means that essays can be judged anonymously. The entrant’s name should be provided in a separate page, labeled ENTRY FORM provided along with other information, including word count.

5. References – books, articles or online sources that are cited should be listed at the end of the essay. Mark the place in the text by enclosing the number within a parenthesis that refers to the reference list. For example, in the text: “ … Juan de la Cruz’s work on this subject is deemed important (10) … In the reference list, in the numerical order …

Please limit published references to maximum of 3; then, provide full but short information within the text.

For film titles, no limit: Name of filmmaker and year of release in parentheses

For books or articles: Name of author, title (not subtitle) of article, title (not subtitle) of book, publisher, year published, page number of range, short URL (if applicable): all separated by commas.

Titles of books, films, albums, etc., should be in Italics;

Titles of articles, episodes, songs, etc., should be in quotation marks.

6. Quotations should also be acknowledged in the references.

7. The essay should be an original piece of writing. It should be written in the entrant’s own words and not copied from any book, article or the internet. FACINE will ask the entrant to say YES to a return email when asked; or print the following in a separate sheet of paper, sign, scan and email the pdf of the signed document:

“I hereby attest that this is an original entry and that it has not been copied from any other source, and that violation of this claim shall be my responsibility alone.”

8. All essays submitted for competition will be read and selected for awarding by a Panel of Jury of at least three members, based on the following criteria:

a. Writing style – 30%

b. Insightfulness – 40%

c. Potential to contribute to existing literature in the field of Philippine and Filipino diasporic film criticism – 30%

10. Three winners in each category will be selected by a Panel of Jury, with the following prizes:

11. Finalists will be announced on July 5, 2018; and winners declared on the FACINE 25 Awards Night on October 21, 2018.
