25 Oct 2018

The UP Film Institute proudly invites the general public to the exhibit opening of our staff-artist Sinag de Leon.

Sinag who is a member of the programming team of UPFI, who does the logistics and promotion of screenings on a daily basis, also busies herself with ‘other paperworks’ worthy of a show. Check out her pieces at the PAPER AND PAINT exhibit which also features works of Babeth Lolarga.

The PAPER AND PAINT exhibit will open on November 8, 2018 (5PM) at the Gourmet Gypsy Art Cafe (#25 Don A. Roces Ave. Brgy. Paligsahan, QC). The exhibit will run until January 8, 2019.

Congratulations and wishing you the very best for the exhibit, Sinag!

Kidlat’s filmmaking pioneered an alternative path for later independent filmmakers. His mode of expression featured a distinct Filipino perspective that garnered local and international recognitions. His “indiogenius” cinema also predated the regional filmmaking that emerged in recent times.

Kidlat Tahimik is named National Artist together with Larry Alcala (visual arts), Amelia Lapeña Bonifacio (theater), Ryan Cayabyab (music), Francisco Mañosa (architecture), Resil Mojares (literature), and Ramon Muzones (literature).

The Order of National Artists is the highest recognition given by the Philippine government to Filipinos who have made significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts.

15 Oct 2018

The University of the Philippines Film Institute (UPFI) denounces the declaration made by assistant deputy chief of staff for operations of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Brig. Gen. Antonio Parlade Jr., claiming that the screening activities under the auspices of the state university are a means to recruit students to the New People’s Army.

Every program that the UPFI organizes is in keeping with its mandate to educate the university’s national constituency foremost about Philippine history and culture and to promote and protect the highest ideals of the university including love for one’s country and the pursuit of truth.

We protest all acts that impute malice and any motive on our programs other than UPFI’s express mandate. We decry the threat to us and our audiences that the pronouncement implies at a time when the state is engaged in intense counter-insurgency campaigns. We denounce any explicit or implicit attempt to censor us especially in these critical times and to curtail the responsible use of our freedom of expression, speech, and assembly in the University of the Philippines.

In the interest of truth, we call on the leadership of the AFP to retract the statement which serves to twist the people’s perception and besmirch not only UPFI’s institutional standing but ultimately the very ideals of truth, justice, and honor that UPFI as a unit of the country’s foremost establishment of higher learning and the University of the Philippines as a whole hold in the highest regard.

Press release from Instituto Cervantes:

On October 15 and 16, PELÍCULA-Spanish Film Festival will feature the program “Bergman in Spain” in Cine Adarna (UP Diliman). This curated film series gives honor to the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007) as we celebrate his birth centennial this year.

After the Festival’s first leg in Greenbelt 3 Cinemas, the 17th edition of Instituto Cervantes’ PELÍCULA, in collaboration with the Embassy of Sweden and the UP Film Institute, pays tribute to one of the main filmmakers in the History of Cinema through presenting two of Bergman’s films. In addition, two Spanish films influenced by the Swedish maestro’s filmography will also be presented.

The film series will kick off on October 15, at 5pm, with the screening of Bergman’s classic Wild Strawberries (1957). It will be followed at 7pm by the caustic family drama Cría cuervos, directed by Carlos Saura in 1975. On October 16, the program will conclude with back to back screenings of Bergman and Almodóvar –two world classics not to be missed. Persona (1966), arguably Bergman’s most memorable masterpiece, will be screened at 5pm. It will be followed at 7pm by Pedro Almodóvar’s unorthodox drama Tacones lejanos (1991).

During its first leg at Greenbelt 3, PELÍCULA 2018 offered a line-up of films ranging from romance (Los amores cobardes) and comedy (Campeones, La llamada, Mi querida cofradía) to documentary (Dancing Beethoven), adventure (Oro), animation (Atrapa la banderaMemorias de un hombre en pijama), and drama (La novia). Aside from its line-up of movies in different genres, PELÍCULA’s first leg also showed Latin American cinema with feature films from Argentina (The Summit, The Last Suit), and Cuba (Últimos días en La Habana).

PELÍCULA 2018 will come to a close On October 20, at Instituto Cervantes Intramuros, with two special screenings. At 4pm, the “Premio del Público”, the movie chosen by the Audience as the best of the Festival, will be re-shown. Then at 6:30pm, Set B of the series Encuentros en el cine: Shorts from the Philippines and Spain will be screened. The program will feature six recently produced Spanish shorts and two Filipino short films —The Gathering, by Arvin Belarmino, and actor Xian Lim’s Our Love Story, his first attempt behind the camera.

Presented by Instituto Cervantes, the Embassy of Spain–AECID, TurEspaña, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), PELÍCULA is made possible by Emperador Distillers, Turkish Airlines, and PTC. The Festival is also in collaboration with the Embassy of Sweden, Ayala Malls Cinemas, Ayala Museum, Ayala Land, UP Film Institute, ICAA, Intramuros Administration, Picasso Hotel, Cut Print Productions, and UP Círculo Hispánico.
