UPFI Film Center – March 2017

MEDIA RELEASE
To mark International Women’s Day, award-winning Canadian director to open special screenings of ‘Anatomy of Violence,’ ‘Water’

Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta, director of the Oscar-nominated film Water, will bring to Manila her most recent work ‘Anatomy of Violence’ for a one-day special screening coinciding with International Women’s Day.

Mehta will open ‘Anatomy of Violence’ on Wednesday, March 8, 6:00pm, at the Cine Adarna of the University of the Philippines’ Film Institute, Magsaysay Avenue, UP Diliman, Quezon City. Admission is free and on a first come first served basis at the Film Institute’s ticket office.

‘Anatomy of Violence’ is a film that mixes fiction and fact in an improvised exploration of the events leading up to, and following, the notorious gang rape of a young woman by six men in a moving bus in New Delhi, India in 2012.

“So brutal was the rape that it shocked the whole nation and jolted many to protest against the general apathy of authorities and the rising crime rate against girls and women,” says Mehta. “The life of the young girl, her dreams, her family, her ambitions, were covered in great detail by both Indian and the international press, but what is known about the six rapists was, in comparison, perfunctory”.

The film asks questions and tries to answer them as it probes and explores what might have driven the rapists to do such a savage assault.

“What if I made a film from the point of view of the rapists I thought? The idea intrigued me enough to get extensive research done on the lives of the six perpetrators,” Mehta has cited as her motivation for the film.

Mehta will also participate in an invitation-only roundtable discussion with representatives from government, academe, international organizations, and NGOs on violence against women in the Philippines on March 8th at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City following a masterclass for film majors.

Mehta will also open a public screening of her Oscar-nominated film ‘Water,’ on Tuesday, March 7th , 7pm at the Shang Cineplex, Shangri-la Plaza mall in Mandaluyong City. Tickets to this screening are also available for free on a first come first served basis at the Shangri-La Cineplex box office.

The Embassy of Canada in the Philippines is pleased to bring Ms. Mehta to Manila as part of its year-long line-up of activities to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation.

Film Students from Asia Gather in the Philippines and Co-produce Short Films as Part of the 13-day Exchange Program: … and Action! Asia #03

TOKYO and MANILA (February 17, 2017) – The Japan Foundation Asia Center and the University of the Philippines Film Institute will be holding an Exchange Program for Film Students in Asia entitled …and Action! Asia #03 in the Philippines from February 26 to March 10, 2017, in cooperation with Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle -College of Saint Benilde. Nineteen film students from the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia will come together and co-produce short films within an eight-day production schedule in Quezon City.

The Japan Foundation Asia Center, a unit within the Japan Foundation dedicated to conduct and support collaborative initiatives in Asia, launched …and Action! Asia in fiscal year 2014 with the aim of encouraging a new generation of filmmakers from Asia to achieve a greater understanding of filmmaking in other countries, expand their networks in the region, and utilize their experience for their studies and future careers.

For its third edition, the Program duration is extended, and held outside Japan for the first time. Thanks to the partnership with the University of the Philippines Film Institute, the students this year will collaborate in the Philippines, a country currently reveling in what is called the “third golden age of cinema,” bolstered by countless Philippine films enjoying critical acclaim and awards from various film festivals and competitions all over the world.

Another first for the Program is the production and screening of the short films on March 8 from 2PM at Cine Adarna UP Film Institute, which is open to the public with free admission. As with the previous years, the Program will also have lectures by guest speakers including renowned film producer Bianca Balbuena, multi-awarded film director Carlitos Siguion Reyna and screenwriting guru Armando “Bing” Lao.

The Program: … and Action! Asia #03 is generously supported by Sony Philippines.

UPFI Film Center – March 2017

Please help free detained UP Film student Maricon Montajes and other political prisoners by donating to their bail fund. Maricon is one of the youngest political detainee and she has been in detention in Batangas Provincial Jail for six years since June 2010. You can donate through the account of Maricon’s mother:

Maria Concepcion C. Montajes

Banco de Oro – Davao City

SA Act Number 003760012293
Mobile # (0920)902.2369

“I am Maricon Montejos, 21 years old and a resident of Davao City. I am the first born of Raymundo Montajes Sr. and Ma. Concepcion Montajes. In my first year in college, I took up B.A. Communication Major in Journalism in the University of the Philippines-Baguio. It was there where I became an apprentice photographer of the university publication called “Outcrop”. My stint as a photographer in the said publication made me see the real situation of our country. It was through the lenses of my camera where I saw and understood how important my role is, my role as the person who would be able to show to everyone the reality of life in the Philippines.

In my second year I decided to transfer to UP-Diliman where I shifted to the course B.A. Film and Audio Visual Communication. It was during this time where I became more involved with various mobilization and integration in various communities in the country. I did this because I had this belief that in order to create an art for the mass I first have to be immersed with the daily lives of the mass.

And so, I decided to go to the rural areas of the country in order to experience the everyday life of the mass. However, in June 3, 2010 while I was in the community of Brgy. Mabayabas, Taysan, Batangas with Romiel Caňete and Ronilo Baez, armed men arrested us. The 743rd Squadron of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) was having combat operations in the said area when they started shooting at the house where we were staying. I got wounded in the forehead due to this incident.

We were in the custody of the PAF for five days in the camp of the 743rd Combat Squadron in Brgy. Pag-Asa, Taysan, Batangas. We endured various kinds of things such as mental torture and interrogations. My two other fellow detainees were even physically abused. On June 8, 2010, we were transferred to the Batangas Provincial Jail (BPJ) where the authorities filed criminal charges against us. We were charged with Illegal Possession of Firearms and Ammunitions, Illegal Possession of Explosives and Violation of the Omnibus Election Code category P and Q. As of now, we have been in prison for more than a year.

We condemn the elements of the PAF for arresting us. As a student, I feel that my academic and political freedom was violated by these said people but most of all it is obvious that they have violated the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL) and particularly the Hernandez Doctrine of the CARHRHIL, which aims to protect the human rights of the citizens of this country.

We call for the government to grant the “General, Unconditional and Omnibus Amnesty” to all the political prisoners of the country. The government should immediately act on our case; they should review it and dismiss all the criminal charges that have been filed against us. The government should look for the real criminals and set the innocent people, like us, free.

If the Aquino regime truly stands by its goal of leading the Filipino people towards the “tuwid na daan” and if the President truly believes what he says “Kayo ang boss ko” then he should start doing something and give justice to all the political prisoners and victims of Human Rights violations in the country. The government should uphold justice and peace and protect the human rights of its citizens.”
