UPFI Alumni and Student win in Cinemalaya 2017

In celebration of the centennial of Philippine cinema, the University of the Philippines Film Institute, in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Film Development Council of the Philippines, and in partnership with De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, will be holding Sandaan: Philippine Cinema Centennial Conference. The event will be held on September 14-15, 2017 in two venues—at the UP Film Institute Cine Adarna and the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde Theater.

Spanning a hundred years of filmmaking in the country in the hands of native-born filmmakers starting with Don Jose Nepomuceno in 1917 (with the establishment of his company, Malayan Movies), the history of Philippine cinema has gone through varied, and often tumultuous, periods. Starting during the colonial period under Spanish and American rulers, it has survived a cataclysmic war under the Japanese, enjoyed a boost during the post-war independence, went through the period of martial law, and has transformed in the contemporary digital era. The international conference seeks to address these periods which helped define Philippine cinema.

The UP Film Institute, NCCA and FDCP, invite you to this lecture on August 14, 2017, 5 Pm at TM Kalaw, FDCP Auditorium, Manila. This FREE LECTURE by Yale Professor, Dr Charles Musser is part of the Philippine Cinema Centennial celebration.

Note: First come, First serve. Seats are limited.

Taken from the Facebook page of Center for New Cinema:

If a “documentary” as a term emerged in the 1920’s, the media formation that it names is much older, rooted in the illustrated lecture which flourished in the final decades of the nineteenth century. How and when did this formation come about? And how can a media studies approach allow us to assess the numerous illustrated lectures on the Philippine-American War?

Charles Musser is a Professor of Film and Media Studies and American Studies at Yale University. His most recent book is Politicking and Emergent Media: US Presidential Elections of the 1980’s (UC Press, 2016). He is currently working on a feature documentary for John Carlos: Your Family Album, about his son’s dual Filipino and American heritage.
