The Roundtable Discussion on Film Production in Japan and the Philippines is presented by the UP Film Institute and the The Japan Foundation, Manila.

The discussion will be held on August 16, 2019 (Friday) 1 PM – 3 PM @ the Videotheque of UPFI Film Center in UP Diliman, Q.C.

The panel is consisted of:
1) Chong Wishing (director)
2) Toru Emori (film producer)
3) Hirotake Sasaki (film producer)

The discussion will be moderated by the multi-awarded filmmaker Giancarlo Abrahan.

Mr. Chong Wishing

In 1993, Chong won the 38th Kishida Prize for Drama for his play “The TERAYAMA.” He also began to take a step into the film scene; for “All Under the Moon”, he won several awards such as Mainichi Film Awards for Best Screenplay and Kinema Junpo Awards for Best Screenplay. Chong won numerous awards in 1998 for “Begging for Love”: Kinema Junpo Awards for Best Screenplay, Japan Academy Awards for Screenplay of the Year, the 1 st Ryuzo Kikushima Award, and Asia Pacific Screen Awards Best Screenplay. With “YAKINIKU DRAGON”, he received the 8 th Asahi Performing Arts Awards Grand Prix, the 12 th Tsuruya Nanboku Drama Award, the 16th Yomiuri Theater Award for Best Play and the 59 th Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts. “YAKINIKU DRAGON” was ranked 3 rd in Korean Association of Theatre Critic’s “The Best Theatre of 2008,” and ranked 7 th in the National Theater Association of Korea’s “The Best Theatre of the Year.” His notable works in recent years include “Pamaya sumire”, “Bring me my chariot of fire”, “Asia Onsen, Shabake”, “Saraba Hachigatsu no Daichi”, “Subete Shigatsu no Tameni”, “Hisoyakana Kessyou”, “Sekido no shitano Macbeth.” Chong received the Medal with Purple Ribbon for spring 2014.

Mr. Toru Emori
Producer & Project Manager, IK Entertainment

Born in 1969. He handled the package business for Warner Bros. Japan, and the film distribution for Walt Disney Company (Japan), and became a regional manager of Asmik Ace in the Kansai region before he established IK Entertainment in 2013.

Hirotake Sasaki
Producer
Born in Osaka in 1977. Admiring Leos Carax, he went to France after graduating from university. He stayed there for 3 years while performing on the streets. After coming back to Japan, he was involved in various theater productions as a producer and met Chong Wishing. Yakiniku Dragon is his first work as a film producer.

Giancarlo Abrahan
Giancarlo Abrahan translates, writes, directs, and produces for films. He graduated from the UP Film Institute, and he is an alumnus of various international film workshops— ASEAN Film Leaders Incubator, Locarno Filmmakers Academy, Asian Film Academy, Talents Tokyo, and Berlinale Talents. His short film May Dinadala won Youth Jury Prize at the Singapore International Film Festival in 2014. His first feature Dagitab was awarded Best Director & Best Screenplay at Cinemalaya and was cited as Best First Feature by the Young Critics Circle in 2014. His sophomore feature Paki won Best Film, Best Director & Best Screenplay at Cinema One Originals in 2017. Abrahan is also co-writer of I'm Drunk, I Love You (2017) directed by JP Habac and Transit (2013) directed by Hannah Espia. He is a producer of Gusto Kita With All My Hypothalamus (2018) by Dwein Baltazar, and Never Tear Us Apart (2018) by Whammy Alcazaren. Abrahan is an alumnus of Dulaang Sibol, a member of the Asia Pacific Screen Academy, of Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika, at Anyo (LIRA), and the Quiapo Collective.
