Working with Actors
Lecture by Jesper Petzke
April 12 (Friday) 3-6 PM
UPFI Film Center – Videotheque, Osmena Ave. UP Diliman, Q.C.
Every film director knows how difficult it is to make performers bring life to the screen. It is a challenge faced by every filmmaker and every chance to gain knowledge in developing skills to motivate actors is an opportunity worth grabbing. Jesper Petzke, award-winning filmmaker from Munich, Germany, with almost 20 years of experience in the German film industry, comes to town to share his knowledge in directing actors. Son of experimental film guru, Prof. Ingo Petzke, Jesper, is a rising figure not only in German filmmaking but also in film pedagogy. He has written a book, Drehplanung, on movie scheduling. He also regularly gets invited to teach at the Munich University of Television and Film, where he graduated from. The school is home of Academy Award winners and nominees like Wim Wenders (also a Cannes prizewinner).
Jesper believes that working with actors is not just a question of intuition, it is a craft that can be learned like every other craft. There are quintessential principles and devices that are objective and easy to use. This lecture gives a brief overview about the basics, including some of the “dos and dont’s” of the craft, and it also addresses some of the definite techniques that have been proven to work over and over in the history of the performing arts. The talk focuses on providing a fundamental understanding of the work with actors as well as some tools that students and aspiring directors can easily implement into their own work.
The workshop is highly recommended for indie filmmakers, actors (both film and stage), student filmmakers, directing and acting teachers and students, and cineastes.
