Oct 3 Tue 9:30 a.m.
UP Film Institute in partnership with the U.S. Embassy, Manila Philippines proudly presents a FREE PUBLIC VIEWING of Dana Nachman’s award-winning documentary BATKID BEGINS. A director’s talk will follow after the screening.
About the DIRECTOR: Born and raised in New York, director/writer/producer DANA NACHMAN earned her Master’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from New York University. Her other works are: “Witch Hunt” (2008) which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, “Love Hate Love” (2011) at the Tribeca Film Festival, and “The Human Experiment” (2013).
Film Synopsis: On one day, in one city, the world comes together to grant one 5-year-old cancer patient his wish: To become Batman. The documentary looks at the “why” of this flash phenomenon. Why did the intense outpouring of spontaneous support for a child reverberate around the world and become one of the biggest “good news stories” ever? Will Make-A-Wish fulfill its mission to help Miles reclaim his childhood after battling disease for more than half his short life? In the end, the film leaves audiences to decide; did Miles need the world for inspiration? Or did the world need Miles?
BATKID BEGINS premiered at the 2015 Slamdance Film Festival and has since been honored at film festivals across America, winning Audience Awards for Best Documentary at the Cinequest, Omaha, Dallas, Ashland, and Rincón International Film Festivals. Additionally, it has been an official selection at the Bentonville and Chicago Critics Film Festivals.
