Synopsis:
On July 2018, 1,600 Lumads from 15 communities of San Agustin and Lianga, Surigao del Sur–among them, 568 students and 48 teachers from eight community schools–fled their ancestral homeland after harassment by the 75th Battalion of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Barug Tu Salugpongan (Stand for Unity) locates its story in this narrative of militarization and its effects on the Lumad communities. It is a take of the enduring struggle of a bakwit school nearby in Talaingod, Davao called Salugpongan Ta’ Tanu Igkanogon Community Learning Center, Inc.—persevering in its mandate to pass on to the younger generation knowledge about their rich heritage despite attacks and threats to their lives.

The Breakaway Media is an interdisciplinary platform that challenges mainstream media’s social and political reports by delivering truthful narratives and accurate news coverage. Launched on December 10, 2016 to commemorate the International Human Rights Day, the institution is composed of journalists and researchers based in the Philippines.
