Ang Bagong Maestra
Sept 20 Thurs 5 p.m.
Directed by: Gerardo de Leon
Starring: Erlinda Cortes, Ben Perez, Baby Zobel
Synopsis: Acting as a local chieftain leader in behalf of his ailing father, Herman (Ben Perez) made a relentless call to his people to unite and help build the road to transport their goods when the government falls deaf on their petition to do the project. His call at first was responded hesitantly by his people but with the help with his former girlfriend Nita (Erlinda Cortez) people heeded the call and helped with the road construction. With Ofelia making amends with her father and saying sorry to her teacher, the movie ends with Herman and Nita realizing their dreams. Released in 1953, Gerardo de Leon’s “Ang Bagong Maestra” shows the harsh realities and images, the sad truth of the plights of our impoverished people, the poor of the poorest living in the remote barrios and the government’s inaction and neglect on their basic needs. The movie is a social commentary and indictment on government insensitivity. But it also shows how the people rise by working side by side, in the spirit of bayanihan and unity.
