Dr. Grace Javier Alfonso is a professor of film and mass communication at the University of the Philippines' College of Mass Communications. She is now serving her third term as Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU). She became involved in distance education and open learning and served her first administrative duty as the Dean of the School for Distance Education in Diliman for the UPOU in 1995.
In 1999, she became the director of the UPOU’s Audio-Visual Teaching and Learning Laboratory and the director of the UPOU Multimedia Center in 2004. Dr. Alfonso is the current President of the Philippine Society for Distance Learning, the UP Open University Foundation Inc., and Chair of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Technical Panel for Transnational and Distance Education. She is often a member of the Adjudication Committees for the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) Annual Conferences.
Dr. Alfonso is a painter and a sculptor, a filmmaker, director, film researcher and critic, and an expert in multimedia. The University of the Philippines has also bestowed upon her the title of University Artist 1.
