Jose Gutierrez III is a filmmaker and artist whose work involves experimental documentary and photography that explore intersections between realist film theory and phenomenological notions of the lifeworld. He is a PhD Candidate (Film Studies) at the Hong Kong Baptist University – thesis project, Lifeworld Series (2017, 117 mins) available at http://heritage.lib.hkbu. edu.hk/view.php?id=11179 – and an Assistant Professor (on study leave) at the University of the Philippines Film Institute. He obtained his MA in Media Studies (Film) and BA in Psychology from the University of the Philippines-Diliman.
He has published articles in Plaridel: A Philippine Journal of Communication, Media, and Society (2009, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015), The Encyclopedia of Global Human Migration (2013 - "Philippines, Migration, 1948 to Present") and an e-book, Images of the Mother in Lino Brocka Films (2013, ISBN 978-971-97-0463-8), based on his master’s thesis. He has presented on Lino Brocka at the Society for Cinema & Media Studies (SCMS) Conference in Los Angeles in 2010 and Atlanta in 2016 and on his own work, Twelve Hundred Miles/千里之外 (2015, 44 mins) at the International Communication Association (ICA) Conference in Fukuoka, Japan in 2016.
His creative works have been shown at the “Home for Now” Exhibition – held from 1 June to 3 July 2016 at the Hong Kong Baptist University Library and from 4 to 8 September 2016 at the Gallery of the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong – and at the Annual Filipino International Cine Festival in San Francisco, California in 2010, 2013 and 2015.
