ABSTRACT
This seminar will discuss some junctions between the works of film theorists André Bazin and Siegfried Kracauer. Bazin’s idea of the cinematic spectator as an intending subject will be characterized as a starting point of a phenomenological project of investigating the essential features of cinematic experience. This was, in turn, taken on by Kracauer’s notions of the basic properties, affinities, and objects specific to the film medium. Towards the end of the presentation, a prospective model of cinematic realism drawing from the ideas of the two phenomenalist-realist film theorists will then be proposed.
